Colmar – an Italian story rooted in the world of sport
The brand’s history began in 1923 in Monza, where Mario and Irma Colombo founded Manifattura Mario Colombo. Colmar is a combination of the founder’s first name and surname. Initially, the company specialised in the production of workwear, but by the 1930s it had begun to apply its expertise to the creation of skiwear.
Sport as part of the brand’s DNA
In Colmar’s history, sport has never been merely a source of visual inspiration. The collaboration with athletes and the skiing community proved to be a turning point. It was the athletes’ needs that drove the brand to seek out new materials, designs and solutions to improve the comfort of skiing. In the 1950s, the iconic jacket created for Zeno Colò became one of the symbols of this approach, and the Italian skier’s victory in the downhill event at the 1952 Olympic Games in Oslo further cemented Colmar’s place in the history of skiing.
Technology in the service of design
Today, Colmar continues to develop technologies used in sportswear, yet functionality remains closely linked to aesthetics. The brand focuses on the construction of garments, the properties of materials, protection against weather conditions and freedom of movement, while ensuring good proportions and a distinctive silhouette. The search for new material solutions also plays a significant role. Among other things, Colmar has experimented with the use of graphene in fabrics, developing technologies that allow experiences from the world of sport to be transferred to everyday wear.
From the slopes to the city streets
Colmar’s development shows just how naturally the boundary between sports fashion and everyday wear can blur. A jacket inspired by the skiing experience can just as easily become part of an urban outfit today, whilst solutions designed with physical activity in mind find their way into everyday use. It is precisely this direction that has enabled Colmar to build brand recognition beyond the world of winter sports. The brand is present both in ski resorts and in major European cities, where its collections form part of casual fashion.
Collaborations and the contemporary face of Colmar
In developing the brand’s contemporary identity, Colmar also engages in collaborations with designers and artists. Capsule collections have been created in partnership with names and brands such as Au Jour Le Jour, Shayne Oliver and White Mountaineering, amongst others. These projects showcase a more experimental side to Colmar, remaining rooted in the brand’s sporting heritage. At the same time, Colmar maintains its presence in professional sport. Collaborations with athletes and federations remain an important source of experience, which is subsequently applied to the design of future collections.
Colmar – Italian style for the future
Today, Colmar operates across several worlds: sport, technology, fashion and urban lifestyle. Timeless designs are combined with modern materials and contemporary proportions, ensuring that the collections remain relevant without losing their character. The experience gained on the slopes by successive generations serves as the starting point for new collections, in which functionality goes hand in hand with an Italian sense of style. It is precisely for this reason that Colmar is perceived not only as a ski brand, but also as a recognisable symbol of sporting elegance and contemporary Italian style.
