Sebago – an American style icon inspired by the sea and traditional craftsmanship
From Maine to a global icon of classic footwear
The Sebago brand was founded in 1946 by Daniel J. Wellehan Sr., William Beaudoin and Joseph Cordeau in Westbrook, Maine. Their aim was to create footwear that would be durable, comfortable and crafted in accordance with the finest traditions of hand-stitched shoemaking. The first model was the Beefroll Penny Loafer – a hand-stitched moccasin made from the highest-quality leather, which remains one of the brand’s most iconic designs to this day.
A heritage rooted in water
The name Sebago comes from Lake Sebago in the state of Maine – a place that is closely linked to the brand’s history. From the very beginning, the proximity to nature and the world of sailing has inspired the designers, who created footwear suited to both city life and life on a yacht. It is precisely this combination of functionality and timeless style that has become the brand’s foundation.
What makes the Sebago brand stand out?
Craftsmanship passed down from generation to generation
Since its founding, Sebago has remained true to traditional shoemaking craftsmanship. Distinctive hand-stitching, carefully selected natural leathers and attention to the smallest details ensure that every pair of shoes maintains its unique style. For many years, the brand has collaborated with experienced craftsmen for whom quality of workmanship remains just as important as timeless design.
Sailing DNA and New England style
Only a few footwear brands are as closely associated with sailing culture as Sebago. It was this passion that gave rise to the Docksides® model in 1970 – leather sailing shoes with non-slip soles that quickly became an icon of preppy style. Over time, they ceased to be solely the preserve of sailors and became a permanent fixture in everyday fashion, symbolising casual elegance. Over the years, the brand has collaborated with the most important events in the world of sailing, including the America’s Cup and the United States sailing team.
Sebago collections – classics that never go out of fashion
Docksides®, loafers and moccasins
Sebago’s greatest recognition has come from its iconic Docksides®, Beefroll Penny Loafer and classic hand-stitched moccasins. Their timeless style has ensured that, for decades, they have remained an integral part of the wardrobe of fans of Ivy League, preppy and smart casual styles. These are shoes that effortlessly combine elegance with everyday comfort.
From footwear to a complete lifestyle
Sebago’s contemporary collections also include trainers, outdoor footwear, clothing and accessories inspired by life by the water and classic American style. Natural materials, muted colour palettes and functional designs ensure that each piece in the collection perfectly complements the wardrobes of those who value timeless quality.
Sebago worldwide
A symbol of timeless elegance
From a small workshop in the state of Maine, Sebago has grown into a global brand. For decades, its iconic styles have been the choice of lovers of classic footwear, sailors and those who appreciate authentic craftsmanship. The brand has gained particular popularity in Europe, where its loafers and Docksides® quickly became icons of summer elegance with a nautical flair.
The future of the Sebago brand
A tradition that inspires new generations
Despite its continuous development, Sebago remains true to the values that have defined the brand since 1946 – the highest quality of craftsmanship, timeless design and a respect for the craft. Successive collections reinterpret classic models whilst retaining their distinctive aesthetic and functionality. Thanks to a unique blend of American heritage, sailing tradition and masterful shoemaking craftsmanship, Sebago remains one of the world’s most highly regarded premium footwear brands. It is the perfect choice for those seeking products designed with durability, comfort and a timeless style in mind.
